Maaikor the meaning

MAAIKOR

is a linguistic invention I made by combining several words that are meaningful in my artistic practice. Maaikor articulates the concept or themes of Space, Time, Human and Cosmic Relationships, light and heart.

Here, the breaking-down of this composition:

MA

is the japanese concept of space and time. I discovered the MA via a dance work of a japanese choreographer Takeshi Yazaki who explored this notion in Blue Time. This concept of in between talked to me in at a very closed interest and guided my way of reseach since then. Later I discovered via my activity of Contact Improvisation that this dance art-form come from Aikido. I decided then to start Aikido and discovered by a lucky accident that this martial art is based on the conception of Ma, and more specifically of ma ai.

MA AI

In Aikido, we talk about MA AI. Ma means space or time between things or human being. It’s the suspension of the time between two notes in music. It is the moment between the in and out breath. AI means meeting. Meeting of two people in a context of conflit or not.  The other may be an ennemy and the aim of Aikido is to change that ennemi into a friend. To acheive this transformation, the strategy of moving into a spherical space using spiralling and change of direction work the movement in a safe and efficient way to acheive the harmony.

The Ma explore the “being in between” where emerges a range of explorations for the movement. I create situations to test through dance different statements, qualities which affect the movement of the dancers. They may test the relation to space through the element of the light, air.. and relate to their inner space and out space with their own and collective memory of the previous explorations; an intimate experience in a collective experience.

KOR

is a enterlacement of three words : Kokoro, Keren’Or and Kor

Kokoro means heart and precise in aikido that your way of moving should always connect your heart with the heart of your partner. Then your movement included not only, space, dynamic and technique, but a state of mind.

Keren’Or means Ray of Light in hebrew.

Kor could also means Body. In french, you spell it Corps. In German Kor.

To conclude, MAAIKOR include in my practice my attention of using the body to reveale its light and spirit between You, Me, Us and the Universe.
